Clear, glowing, and smooth skin is often portrayed as the epitome of beauty by society. Billboards, magazines, social media, and YouTube videos bombard us with images of perfect skin. But how realistic is this ideal?

As someone who has felt overwhelmed by these flawless images, I can relate to the frustration of feeling that perfect skin is out of reach. The beauty industry constantly pushes products, each claiming to be the ultimate solution. But how do we, as consumers, determine which products best meet our needs?

Growing up, I wasn’t taught any skincare regimens. Honestly, my mom was the type to make honey and aloe masks, scrub her face with brown sugar, and put on some sunscreen when she left the house. My mom didn’t have jars of creams, face oils, or masks—her skin was clear without products. She also never wore makeup and was always ready to show off her freckles.

On the other hand, I wasn’t so lucky. I had breakouts and oily skin. My mom would try to use natural remedies to clean my face, but nothing worked. Off to the shops we went in search of skincare products that could help. After much searching, we found Eucerin products helped a lot with my acne. The products were great for my oily and sensitive skin and contained salicylic acid. The purpose of this one ingredient is to help prevent acne and blackheads by clearing congested pores.

To ensure it worked, I worked on a new routine to assess my acne but also my daily diet. Was I drinking enough water? Did I have a good balance of nutritious food? After a month, I reviewed my logs and realized I didn’t intake a lot of water, and most of my day, I wasn’t always eating the best. To change this, I started with small steps: always keeping water with me wherever I went, pre-packing some meals that were better for me in the long run, and tracking progress.

Present day, I have learned a lot about my skin. A lot of my acne is hormonal and if I drink a lot of water and keep a healthy diet, my skin is clear. However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t break out from time to time. Learning how to adjust my routine to see the results I wanted took time, so don’t feel discouraged if your results aren’t instantaneous; you must trust the process.

Below are some of the items I absolutely cannot live without:

  1. La Roche- Posay (For Normal to Oily Skin) Purifying Foaming Cleaner

This the only year- around face wash doesn’t make my skin feel super dry, rather it feels refreshed. To begin I use one pump face wash, let the face wash settle onto my skin for 2 minutes and then I rinse off and dry my face with a clean towel.

  1. Tatcha- The Rice Wash

I am obsessed with this face wash during the fall and winter season. Not only does it smell amazing, but my skin feels super soft afterwards. I take a pea size amount of the product and allow it to settle onto my skin for 2-3 minutes, then wash off. As I’m washing my face, I instantly feel a difference, my skin feels smoother.

  1. Tacha- The Dewy Skin Cream

The best moisturizer during the fall and winter months. It is a thick cream and best during the cold season for my skin. What I enjoy about this cream is a little goes a long way. During Fall- Winter, this is my morning and night cream, and I can see how moisturized my skin feels throughout the day.

  1. Tatcha- The Indigo Cleansing Balm

The holy grail of cleaners. If I go out and wear makeup and need to give my face a nice clean after a long day, this is my one and only solution to get all that gunk out. Of all products I have ever used, this has taken out even the most stubborn mascara and eyeliner off in one swipe. Hands down, I refuse to wear makeup, if I do not have this bad boy at home. A must have I utterly cannot live without.

During the Spring and Summer months, this is a great go-to trio that helps my skin feel revitalized. The products from this line are lightweight, super cooling, and help with my pores (yes, I have large pores) as it is oil free. Aside from the delightful watermelon scent, the products from this line have beautiful packaging and honestly, check all the boxes to help my sensitive skin thrive in warm, humid, and arid weather during the spring and summer months.

  1. Thayers- Facial Toner Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera Formula (Unscented)

When it comes to toners, I want one that sooths my sensitive skin, moisturizes my skin, and has ingredients that help smooth the texture of my skin and help reduce the size of my pores. This toner not only accomplishes all these things, but anytime my skin is irritated, I give it a good wash and apply this toner and like magic, it renews my skin.

  1. SkinCeuticals- Phloretin CF

The vitamin C serum that delivers repeatedly! I love that it helps with anti-aging and helps reduce fine lines. This is the perfect product to use daily in the morning one the face, neck, and chest. 3-4 drops are all you need to nicely pat this serum in all three areas. Anyone interested in using for hand care, can use this product on the top of hands, too!

  1. SkinCeuticals- Phyto A+ Brightening Treatment

This lightweight gel is great for sensitive skin, acne prone skin, and helps to brighten skin. If you are looking for smoother skin in the process, look nowhere else, this product also helps with skin smoothness. Two pumps of this product is all I need during my routine.

  1. Sunday Riley- U.F.O. ultra-clarifying Acne Treatment Face Oil

This product everything! After cleaning my face in the morning, applying this to a clean face is rejuvenating. I can feel it absorb and nicely pat it onto my skin (away from my eyes) and let it settle for 2 minutes. Using this has been transformative to my skin and has helped with keeping acne at bay and decreasing the number of blackheads on my skin. I highly recommend this to anyone with sensitive and combination skin. 3 drops is all you need to apply.

  1. Eminence Organic- Stone Crop Hydrating Mist

Day or night, no matter the season, this face mist keeps my day going! The scent is wonderful and after using three sprits I gently massage onto my skin, and it feels great! This is a must have no matter where I go.

  1. La Roche- Posay - SPF 60 Sunscreen

The best for last, always have sunscreen ready no matter the season. After going through my daily skin routine, I apply this last before I leave. Since I have oily skin, this doesn’t clog my pore or dry my skin, great for sensitive skin, and fast absorbing which means it’s easy to apply when I am on the go.
