The Creature of Habit Effect

Good morning, Serina here!

Are you guilty of doing things out of habit? Going to the same places, ordering the same foods at your local restaurants, or just playing the same songs on repeat? I am definitely guilty of this, but it's so comforting! Over the past two years, I've been working on stepping out of my comfort zone. In 2021, I told my husband I wanted to start slow by doing something new once a month, whether it was a restaurant, a place to visit, or an activity. This experience has been exhilarating.

Fast forward to 2022, I expanded this new phase to include places I had never visited both locally and domestically. We explored great locations, and I’ll share some photos below. It was liberating to see more of the areas I lived near and took for granted. It was also my first-time visiting Tampa, Florida, which was stunning, especially the food! My family and I also visited Newport and Providence in Rhode Island, which was an incredible experience. Shaking up my routine and embracing new adventures made my days brighter and more fun.

To work on this, I started by noting down all the things I always wanted to do but never made time for. I was surprised by how much I hadn't done. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I saw my list as new possibilities. This isn't a list to complete in one day—remember, there are 365 days in a year. I chose one new adventure per month. Maybe once a week works for you, or once a quarter. Whatever pace you choose, give yourself grace. It's not a marathon; it’s a journey. Take your time.

Presently, I've added more domestic travel to my list. This year, my husband and I enjoyed our time in Texas, starting with a visit to San Antonio. Later this month, we'll be heading to the Dallas area. I absolutely loved every moment in San Antonio—we saw the solar eclipse with so many tourists and locals, tried new restaurants, and discovered hidden gems, thanks to our kind and helpful Uber driver.

When it comes to music, shows, and movies, I've been working on stepping out of my comfort zone. I love my streaming services, especially Netflix. I've been exploring new shows based on their recommendations and researching reviews online. Sometimes, I even randomly select a show to watch. For music, I use Spotify. I curate my playlists, and I've been enjoying the AI DJ feature, which introduces me to new songs and artists. Spotify’s podcasts and audiobooks have also been fantastic, allowing me to listen to books while working around the house or dive into new topics through various podcasts.

This journey has been incredibly rewarding. I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone, embrace new experiences, and enjoy the adventure.

See you on the next post!

Yours Truly,

Serina
