We all know that the journey of self-growth isn’t always as easy as we hope. One day, you’re full of motivation, crushing your new habits with ease, and the next, life throws a curveball and you’re feeling off-track. Maybe something triggered you, maybe life got a little overwhelming, or maybe you're just not seeing progress as quickly as you'd like. Trust me, I’ve been there too.
But here’s the thing—setbacks are normal. Life isn’t a straight line, and growth certainly isn’t. There will be times when you might feel like quitting, but that’s when it’s most important to push through and keep showing up for yourself. So, how do you stay committed to your new habits when life gets messy? Let me share a few things that have worked for me and might help you, too.
Start Small, Win Big
When I started working on myself, I wanted to change everything at once—big mistake. Instead of overwhelming yourself with massive changes, start small. Choose one or two habits that matter the most and build from there. For me, this looked like adding a short walk to my day or drinking more water. These little habits might seem small, but they create a snowball effect. Once you start seeing progress, you’ll feel more motivated to keep going. Remember, small steps lead to big wins.
Find Your Accountability Tribe
One of the hardest parts of sticking to new habits is staying accountable. From my experience and speaking to others, having someone to check in with, whether it’s a friend, family member, or even an online community, can make a huge difference. If having an accountability partner isn’t your thing, track your progress in a journal or app. When you hold yourself accountable, you’re more likely to stay committed.
Embrace the Imperfections
We’re human, and we’re not perfect. In the past, I’d miss one workout or have a day where I wasn’t sticking to my habits, and I’d feel like a complete failure. That mindset kept me stuck. But here's the truth: missing one day or having an off moment doesn’t undo all your progress. Growth is messy, and it’s okay if you have days where things don’t go as planned. The key is to keep going. Forgive yourself, and don’t let one slip-up turn into a downward spiral.
Visualize the Why Behind It All
When things get tough, and you’re questioning why you even started, remember your "why." Why did you want to start these habits in the first place? Whether it’s improving your health, building confidence, or finding peace, connecting with the bigger picture will help you stay focused. Personally, I like to take a moment to visualize what life will look like once these habits are fully ingrained in my day-to-day. It helps keep me motivated, even on the hardest days.
Celebrate Even the Small Wins
We get so caught up in where we’re going that we forget to appreciate how far we’ve already come. Don’t wait until you’ve hit your biggest goals to celebrate—acknowledge the small wins along the way. Whether it's sticking to your habit for a week straight or simply resisting an old, unhealthy pattern, it’s all progress! I’ve learned that celebrating the little milestones helps boost my confidence and keeps me motivated to keep moving forward.
Your self-growth journey is exactly that—a journey. You’ll have days where you feel on top of the world and days where everything feels hard, but the most important thing is to keep showing up for yourself. Progress may be slow, and life might throw you off course, but every small step you take matters. Stick to those habits, be kind to yourself when you stumble, and remember—you’re growing every single day, even when it doesn’t feel like it.
How do you stay committed to your new habits?
See you in the next post!
Yours Truly,
Serina
