Serina Travel Diaries: Vanderbilt Museum

Writer's picture: SerinaJSerinaJ

As a history buff, I truly enjoy traveling to destinations and museums to see, learn, and experience a preserved timeframe. One of the places that have enchanted me is the Vanderbilt Museum on the north shore of Long Island. Walking through the grounds, day, or night, is an experience like no other. From the charming brick walks and cobblestone roads to the Spanish-Mediterranean style mansion and the majestic planetarium on site—visiting this historic site is worth the trip!

Driving to the entrance of the museum, you pass through beautiful iron gates with two large eagles spreading their wings—it's quite a sight. This historic property has been preserved for the public to understand the way William K. Vanderbilt II lived. The architecture of the mansion has beautiful Spanish and North African inspiration. The Spanish tiled roofs bring charm to the property, and the décor of the home highlights Vanderbilt’s travel experiences and taste. This beautiful 24-room home gives visitors a glimpse into a lifestyle of true cultural appreciation.

What makes this property a true showstopper is its location by the water, gardens, and planetarium. This beautiful property overlooks Northport Bay, and on a clear day, you can see Asharoken. Walking through the gardens, looking at the bay, or just gazing at the night sky is truly picture-perfect. Not only do the grounds serve as a museum, but they also allow visitors to learn more about astronomy, thanks to their planetarium.

The Vanderbilt’s Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium is open to the public and hosts various day and evening shows. Their state-of-the-art auditorium has a 60-foot dome that allows visitors to learn about the stars and other areas in astronomy. On clear nights, stargazers can enjoy examining the night sky through the 16-inch Meade reflecting telescope. If you haven’t done this before, it's a definite must-do—it's exhilarating!

Walking the grounds at night will give you all the feels! The grounds are glowing, and the lamps emit a warm light. During summer, the flowers are in full bloom, and the night scene is romantic and captivating! If you’re thinking of a first date stroll or just looking to try something new with a picturesque setting, this is your one-stop shop.

What are some historical places you have visited that have mesmerized you?

See you in the next post!

Yours Truly,

Serina
