Family, Tradition, and Elegance: Revisiting El Convento Hotel

Updated: Sep 18

There's something magical about visiting a place that holds so many personal memories, a place where history and tradition blend into the present. For me, that place is El Convento Hotel in the heart of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. I have been visiting this iconic hotel since I was small, and it has grown to become a beloved part of my family’s traditions and personal history.

My father’s side of the family hails from Puerto Rico, and every time we would visit the island, dinner at El Convento was a tradition we held close. Nestled in the charming, narrow streets of Old San Juan, El Convento is more than just a hotel—it’s a living piece of Puerto Rican history. Once a convent dating back to the 1600s, the hotel is now a luxurious escape that seamlessly blends its colonial past with the modern-day comforts and elegance you'd expect from a five-star stay.

The warm stone walls, stunning archways, and historic courtyards bring me back every time I set foot there. No matter how much time has passed between visits, staying at El Convento feels like a homecoming. The old-world charm, coupled with modern amenities, makes for an unforgettable experience. I often find myself daydreaming about the long dinners we’ve had there, under the soft glow of the lanterns that light up the restaurant’s elegant outdoor space. The food is always spectacular, a true celebration of Puerto Rican cuisine, and each bite is filled with the flavors and traditions that remind me of the island’s rich culture.

But it’s not just the hotel that enchants me—Old San Juan is like a dream. Every corner, every street, and every cobblestone road holds its own beauty. I love walking through the colorful streets, lined with pastel homes and vibrant murals, with El Morro and the shimmering ocean in the distance. You can feel the history in the air, and every time I visit, I’m amazed by how much there is to explore and learn. Whether it's the old forts, the lush tropical plants spilling over balconies, or the local artisan shops, Old San Juan is a place where you can get lost in both time and beauty.

Each visit reminds me how lucky I am to experience mi isla bonita in such a special way. To be able to stay at a place that honors the past while providing a luxurious present makes El Convento feel even more significant in my heart. Whether it’s a stay at the hotel or simply visiting for dinner, I always leave feeling more connected to my roots and the rich history of Puerto Rico.

For those who’ve never visited, I highly recommend experiencing Old San Juan’s beauty and history, and of course, a stay or visit to El Convento Hotel. It's a journey through time, filled with elegance, luxury, and the soul of Puerto Rico.

Have you visited this magical place or explored the beauty of Old San Juan?

See you in the next post!

Yours Truly,

Serina
